Press Release MP3 LyricReview™ Beta Available for Download
August 9, 2006
COLUMBUS, OH - Tercenim™ today announced the immediate availability for download of a beta release of its new product
MP3 LyricReview™. MP3 LyricReview™ is for parents who are concerned about the content of their children's music files.
It is completely free of charge with no adware or spyware involved.
Children can obtain music files from web sites, Internet news
groups, and from friends through instant messaging software, email,
and the sharing of CDs. Music lyrics may contain sexual, violent,
and other content that a parent may feel is inappropriate for their
child.
A recent study published by
Pediatrics (the official journal of the American Academy of
Pediatrics) states that "The average youth listens to
music 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day. Sexual themes are common
in much of this music and range from romantic and playful to
degrading and hostile." The study concluded that "Listening to
music with degrading sexual lyrics is related to advances
in a range of sexual activities among adolescents." The
American Academy of Pediatrics points out that "Parents can
reduce the effect media violence has on children by...monitoring
the...music children listen to, for violent themes."
While tools exist for parents to monitor
many of their children's online activities and protect them from
inappropriate text and images, until now there was no efficient way for
parents to monitor or filter music files.
Most music files are stored in a format called MP3. Files in that format generally include information about the main content of the file, including the artist and song title. MP3 LyricReview™ extracts the artist and song title from
each MP3 music file (where present) and downloads the song lyrics
from one of the various third-party Internet sites that publish
them. It then compares the lyrics with a list of matching criteria and can quarantine or delete
songs with lyrics that the parents feel is inappropriate. The
matching criteria can be easily customized by the parent to reflect
their own standards for their child. The software also facilitates
manual review of the lyrics.
Tercenim's owner Mark Freeman said, "Composers should feel free
to write whatever they like without feeling constrained by the
sensitivities of a particular child. However, parents should have a
practical way to limit their children's exposure to messages that
they feel are inappropriate. While MP3 LyricReview is not a perfect
solution, it is the best currently available and is provided for
free as a way to give back to the Internet community."
